No: 68 Date: 3/1/1997 Name: Chancellor Del Weber The man credited with transforming the University of Nebraska at Omaha from "West Dodge High" to a jewel of higher education was honored while UNO chancellor. The chancellor is shown holding a bowling ball, illustrating his enthusiasm for bowling. His reign as King of Ak-Sar-Ben in 1989 also is indicated in the drawing. Many jokes were made about his alleged bad driving, and the artist shows Weber as a stunt driver wearing a helmet. Weber stepped down at the end of the 1997 semester. Dr. Del Weber became an OPPD director in 1996. Born and raised in Columbus, Neb., Weber was the son of a laborer with a sixth grade education. It was Weber's mother who pushed her youngest child to go to college. He worked his way through college, then was drafted into the Army and put into counterintelligence. He was a teacher in Creston, Neb. before enrolling at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Following four years as an Arizona State professor, he became assistant to the president at a new university, Cleveland State. He returned to Arizona State before answering an ad for UNO chancellor.
