Name: Mayor Tom Hanafan
The first Council Bluffs mayor to become a "Face," Hanafan was pleased to see his city recognized, even if on a barroom floor. In the drawing, he is launching an Ameristar riverboat with Bluff's Run and Harvey's casinos also depicted. Former Mayor Gene Leahy showed up at the event with a T-shirt that was printed with "XXX City," to josh then-Omaha Mayor Hal Daub for his controversial comment about Council Bluffs being a triple X-rated city. Daub is shown measuring to make sure the Council Bluffs casinos riverboats were on the Iowa side of the river, a joke about a dispute at that time. Hanafan was on stage during several Omaha Press Club Shows. During one appearance, he made jokes about gambling in Council Bluffs. He came on stage throwing money around and invited the Press Club to hold the next show in Council Bluffs. The lifelong Council Bluffs resident has served as mayor since 1988. Back to Top
