Name: V.J. Skutt
The late V.J. Skutt is remembered as a legend in the insurance industry. At the time of his "Face" unveiling, he had been president of Mutual of Omaha for 35 years, starting in 1949. He took the company from a small regional insurer to a national financial services organization. The company's CEO took delight in being mistaken for Marlin Perkins, the beloved host of the television program, "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom." They looked much alike. Skutt was responsible for starting the long-running television program that established Mutual of Omaha in millions of minds around the nation, and he nurtured the show over the years. Shown popping out of the Mutual dome are windup-toy sales people. In an alligator's mouth is Jim Fowler of Mutual's television show. He holds a life insurance policy, while Skutt holds a pen for him to sign it. The TV script reads: "Marlin ropes a snake, while Jim wrestles an alligator." Skutt died in February 1993.  Back to Top
