Name: Mayor Al Veys
Omaha Mayor Veys was a target of good-natured jokes during three different years at the Omaha Press Club Show. The 1978 show was called "Oy Veys." In 1979, the club would kid the mayor about his standoff with the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women in "The Lid's Off." Lyrics included: "Stand up, stand up, for Veys. Remember him in prayer. He stuck it to the libbers. Let's hear it for our mayor." In the Face drawing is a woman wearing the group's T-shirt. Rumor was that some women wanted to step on his Face on the Barroom Floor. In 1980, the show would be called "The Amazing Veys." His Face was unveiled during a "Hawaiian" night at the club. The grocery store owner is shown in the drawing riding in a shopping cart and holding "Grover," a modern metal sculpture that he had ordered removed from in front of the city-county building, causing protests from arts supporters. He was elected in a write-in campaign in 1977 and served as mayor until 1981. Veys died in 2002. Back to Top
