Name: State Senator Ernie Chambers
Senator Ernie Chambers was selected for his work in the legislature, where he represented a predominantly African-American community. He was first elected in 1970 and has been reelected to his north Omaha district every consecutive term since. One important piece of legislation by Chambers was a push for election of city council members by district. This legislation gave North Omaha more of a voice in government. The long-time public servant was not the first black state senator. Dr. Matthew O. Ricketts held that honor in 1892. Chambers did not see his Face on the Barroom Floor until 20 years later during a visit to the club. The honoree did not show up for his unveiling. Back to Top
