No: 86 Date: 2/1/2002 Name: Dr. James Armitage Founder of the bone marrow transplant program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, world-renowned scientist Jim Armitage is shown in the caricature as the Wizard of Omaha (from the classic story, "Wizard of Oz"). He's preparing to transplant a brain into the Scarecrow, a heart into the Tin Man and give the Cowardly Lion courage. At the time, Armitage was dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. The transplant program he founded is known as one of the nation's best. Nationally, he has been president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and president of the American Society for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation. The prodigious researcher had published more than 300 papers in scientific journals. He was named fellow in the Royal College of Physicians in 1995 in London and, closer to home, served as King of Ak-Sar-Ben in 1998. Why the snake in the drawing? Armitage claims to love snakes.
